Never Underestimate Experience

Never underestimate

Experience

I have a chaplain friend who happens to pastor the largest mixed congregation in the Southeastern part of the state of Oklahoma. His gift to interact with so many folks is amazing.

He sent me a thought I’d like to share with the above title, of “Never underestimate experience.”

As the story goes a large cruise ship became stranded about seventy-five miles off the coast of Japan. It suffered a major engine breakdown. Wouldn’t you know the ships engineer was unable to make the necessary repair to get them to shore.

They flew in by chopper a man with 40 years of diesel experience on ocean-going ships. He carefully inspected the engine and its various moving parts from top to bottom.

After looking things over, he reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. Then ever so gently he tapped the side of the massive diesel motor several times. Instantly, the engine lurched into life with full force. The engine was fixed!

7 days later the owner of the massive vessel received a bill for ten thousand dollars. “What? The owner said. You hardly did anything. Please send me an itemized bill.” The reply simply said, “Tapping with the hammer $2.00. But knowing where to tap? $9,998.00

On the other hand, Paul put his experience this way, “If I must boast, I will boast in the things which concern my infirmity. (2Cor. 11:30). Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was ship-wrecked; a night and a day in the deep. (v.25)

God gave Paul the grace and endurance to risk his life to share the gospel of good news of the risen Savior, the Son of God. Do you know God’s word well enough that you can tap into the Bible to give the right words to get a down-and-out soul up and running? If not, you need the Sunday school. And if you do, the Sunday school needs you and your experience.
