My Kind of People

I came across the writing of Dave Roper who writes for Our Daily Bread whom I’ve mentioned in the past was my mentor while living in Boise, Idaho. He shared the thought of his mentor Dr. Ray Stedman, who one Sunday morning stepped to the pulpit and read the scripture for the day.

He read 1st Cor. 6:1-11 with strong emphases on Verse 11. Then said, “Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards or abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.”

Stedman looked up with a bemused smile on his face, and said, “I’m curious: Just how many of you has one or more of these sins in your background? Now, how many of you are willing to stand this morning before God and this congregation?”

There was a young man sitting in the middle isle who had never been in church before. It was later learned that he had recently been saved at a Billy Graham crusade and came with fear and trembling to church that Sunday, not knowing what he would find. He later expressed that when he heard the pastor’s question, he looked around to see if anyone would stand. He stood alone. At first no one else did; but then one by one most of the congregation was on their feet. He thought to himself, “Hey, these are my kind of people!”

Have you ever noticed how God will confirm certain things to you? One morning I was listening to a young TV preacher who was praising God for what he had done in bringing about a needed change in his life. Without being boastful or bragging about or even going into great details of his sordid past, he praised and thanked God that he had been forgiven of his MANY sins.

A young lady was heard to say, “That’s why I’m a member of this church, this Preacher is my kind of people.

Nothing in our hands we bring, simply to thy cross we cling. William J. Gaither says the way to become God’s kind of people is found in the chorus of a song that says, “He touched me, oh, He touched me, and oh, the joy that floods my soul! Something happened and now I know He touched me and made me whole.
