An Honest Heart

Have you ever taken the time to just stroll through a cemetery and read the various names and different epitaphs? One was discovered that simply read, “J. Holgate: an honest man.” Needless to say, nothing of Holgate’s life was known by this reader and yet, because the writing and lettering was so ornate, one could almost assume he must have struck it rich. However, whatever he accomplished in his lifetime, he’s remembered for just one thing: He was “An Honest Man.”

History tells us that Diogenes, the Greek philosopher, spent a lifetime in search of honesty and finally concluded that an honest man could not be found. Honest people are hard to find in any age, but the trait is one that greatly matters.

Honesty is the best policy; it’s the only policy, and one of the marks of man or woman who lives in God’s presence. King David expressed the following thought, “Lord …Who may dwell in Your Holy hill? He who walks uprightly” Ps.15:1-2.

The third grade teacher pointed to the left side of her chest and said, “This is where your heart is.” “Mine is where I sit down,” a little boy called out from the back of the class.

“Whatever gave you that idea?” the shocked teacher asked. “Well” the little fellow replied, “every time I do something sort of good, my grandma pats me there and says, ‘Bless your little heart.’”

Sound advice says, “Live in such a way that when people think of honesty and integrity, they’ll think of you.”
